Sakewa is a significant cultural and religious festival celebrated by the Kirat Khambu Rai community in Sikkim. It’s a nine-day celebration that honors Mother Earth, marking the beginning of the new farming year. The festival typically falls in April-May, coinciding with the full moon day of the Hindu month of Baisakh. During Sakewa, the community comes together to perform Bhumi Puja, a ceremonial worship of the earth, followed by traditional dances like Silli and Sakela, which depict the connection between nature and the community.
